Adenosineisanendogenousnucleosidegeneratedlocallyintissuesunderconditionsofhypoxia,ischemia,orinflammation.Itmodulatesavarietyofphysiologicalfunctionsinmanytissuesincludingthebrainandheart.^1,2 Adenosineexertsitsactionviafourspecificadenosinereceptors(alsonamedP1purinergicreceptors):AdenosineA₁ Receptor (A₁AR), AdenosineA_2A Receptor (A_2AAR),AdenosineA_2B Receptor (A_2BAR),and AdenosineA₃ Receptor (A₃AR).Thevariousadenosinereceptorscanbedistinguishedonthebasisoftheirdistinctmolecularstructures,distincttissuedistributions,anddifferentialselectivityforadenosineanalogs.^1-4 AllareintegralmembraneproteinsandaremembersoftheGprotein-coupledreceptorsuperfamily.Theyshareacommonstructureofsevenputativetransmembranedomains,anextracellularaminoterminus,acytoplasmiccarboxylterminus,andathirdintracellularloopimportantinbindingGproteins.^1-3
